Biography

Yi-Chun Du earned his BSc and MSc degrees in biomedical engineering (BME) from Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) in 2001 and 2003, respectively. He then pursued his Ph.D. in the Department of BME at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and graduated in 2008. Following that, from 2009 to 2010, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of BME at NCKU. Later, he transitioned to the industry, serving as a research and development manager at Taiwan CareTech Corporation from 2011 to 2013. During this period, he invented Taiwan's first domestic dental CT system, the Cone Beam 3D Imaging System, which was honored with the National Quality Gold Award in Taiwan.

Returning to academia, Yi-Chun Du joined Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (STUST) as an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) in 2013. He was subsequently promoted to associate professor in 2016 and then to full professor in 2019. Additionally, he held the position of director at the Allied Advanced and Intelligent Biomedical Research Center (A2IBRC) at STUST from 2017 to 2020. He later moved to NCKU as an associate professor in BME in 2020 and was promoted to full professor in 2023.

Currently, Professor Du leads the Digital Health and Biorobotics Laboratory (DHB Lab). His research interests encompass digital healthcare, wearable devices, IoT, medical biorobotics, and medical imaging systems, all aimed at enhancing health by offering improved evaluation and diagnosis solutions in the medical field. He also served as the director of the industrial team of the Medical Device Innovation Center (MDIC) at NCKU, where he effectively applied research findings to various successful industry-academia collaboration projects and technology transfers. Moreover, he actively engaged in collaborative efforts with international research units in countries such as Vietnam, Egypt, and Thailand, with the goal of commercializing research outcomes. Professor Du has mentored over 40 BSc, MSc, and PhD students, who, under his guidance, participated in numerous domestic and international competitions and garnered over 100 awards.

As of 2024, Professor Du has served as a principal investigator for more than 55 Taiwan government projects (total funding ~7.8M US), 49 industrial projects (total funding ~1.1M US), and 7 technology transfer cases (total funding~0.1M US). He has authored 68 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, 2 book chapters, and 60 international conference proceedings. Additionally, he has been honored with multiple awards for his contributions to teaching and research efforts.
